A Practical Guide to Reading Safer Choice Product Information
Use EPA’s Safer Choice information as a starting point when organizing the cleaning products already in your home.
Materials
- A note-taking app or paper list
- The labels from products you already own
- A recycling or discard box
- Internet access for the EPA Safer Choice page
Steps
- Gather household cleaning products in one well-ventilated area and keep each container closed.
- Write down each product’s name and the directions on its label; do not transfer products into unmarked containers.
- Open the EPA Safer Choice source linked below and review the program information before making any purchase decision.
- Use your list to group products by the task named on their labels, rather than by assumptions about what they can be combined with.
- Return each product to its original storage location and follow label directions for any disposal or replacement decision.
Safety and boundaries
- Never mix bleach with ammonia, acids, vinegar, alcohol, or other cleaners.
- Keep products in their original labeled containers and follow each label’s directions.
- This guide is limited to product organization and selection; it does not provide disinfection, dilution, or remediation instructions.
