A Practical Guide to Reading Safer Choice Product Information

5 minute read

Use EPA’s Safer Choice information as a starting point when organizing the cleaning products already in your home.

Materials

Steps

  1. Gather household cleaning products in one well-ventilated area and keep each container closed.
  2. Write down each product’s name and the directions on its label; do not transfer products into unmarked containers.
  3. Open the EPA Safer Choice source linked below and review the program information before making any purchase decision.
  4. Use your list to group products by the task named on their labels, rather than by assumptions about what they can be combined with.
  5. Return each product to its original storage location and follow label directions for any disposal or replacement decision.

Safety and boundaries

  • Never mix bleach with ammonia, acids, vinegar, alcohol, or other cleaners.
  • Keep products in their original labeled containers and follow each label’s directions.
  • This guide is limited to product organization and selection; it does not provide disinfection, dilution, or remediation instructions.
